Models of government
published: Wednesday | March 3, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a Jamaican living in the United States for 25 years and have travelled extensively throughout the Americas. My emphasis will be placed on the political model of Costa Rica and the U.S. In the Costa Rican model an elected president can only serve one five-year term while in the United States of America the president can be elected for two four-year terms maximum.

Those models infuse into the system a dynamic nature of intellectual creativity and help to prevent a system of continuous corruption. We are severely in need of true political reform in Jamaica where elected officials can be held accountable for their actions. Our leaders must understand that to lead is giving of self unconditionally for national upliftment.

In Management 101 all great leaders will surround themselves with competent associates; in so doing proper implementation of policies can be executed. We must never forget the number one motivating element is love, which generates self-respect.

If we look at Garvey, Malcolm X and Kenyatta, these individuals have one thing in common - sincerity in their desire to uplift their people, in simple terms, Love of making a better place for their people.

I am, etc.,

DERRICK O'REAGAN
