AS GOVERNMENT continues to look overseas for international assistance to tackle the country's crime problem, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Toronto Police are now pursuing the possibility of expanding their co-operation agreement to include liaison officers in both countries.
This was disclosed Monday by Police Commissioner Francis Forbes, following a lengthy meeting with Toronto Police Chief, Julian Fantino, who arrived in the island last Friday on a one-week visit.
The JCF already has liaison officers in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Reports are that Commissioner Forbes and Chief Fantino discussed issues related to organised crime, money laundering, gangs, guns and drugs.
The liaison officers on either borders will provide the respective organisation with vital information.
"There will be an exchange programme and in a few weeks time some of our senior officers will be going to Toronto to explore their system," said Commissioner Forbes.
The Jamaican officers will be looking at the management of criminal data base by the Toronto police and how they probe organise crime. Chief Fantino said Jamaicans living in Toronto were not linked to any particular type of crime.
He singled out one particular case in which a Jamaican male was deported several times to Jamaica and on each occasion returned to Canada on fraudulent documents.
Chief Fantino brought with him thousand of books to be distributed in schools islandwide. He is expected to depart the island on Thursday.
