CARICOM should have assisted Haiti
published: Thursday | March 4, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MANY OF us over here from the Caribbean waited with bated breath for CARICOM to have given some practical help to President Aristide in his hour of need. After all, even a small force of peacekeepers, if sent in long ago, could have probably saved Amiserables and Les Cayes from falling to the rebels.

After all, when Dr. Eric Williams faced an insurrection from the army at Teteron Bay, we despatched Brigadier David Smith and other officers to offer help. If memory serves me right, on the last occasion when Haiti had problems we sent part of the peacekeeping mission.

This was an unparalleled opportunity for CARICOM to have shown that 'we are our brother's keeper' but also that, like South Africa, we are mature enough to deal with any problem among us in the archipelago.

Prime Minister Patterson's warning that 'this is a dangerous precedent' comes too late; regime change is what the neo-conservatives are about when your face and style do not satisfy. Jamaicans should be aware that 'same knife stick sheep stick goat'.

I am, etc.,
