THE EDITOR, Sir:
I REFER to your article in today's Gleaner on "local education: international funding".
All stakeholders must be commended for their efforts to enhance the delivery of education. However, I would respectfully add to the suggestion by Dr. Hughes of the Planning Institute, that vision is a critical issue as well. For no matter how much attention is paid to the height of the structure we seek to build, its longevity and sustainability is contingent on the quality of the foundation.
Why was no reference made to the need for integrating education in human values, those values that make us all human and humane, in to the school curriculum? Therefore, if the vision for education recognises that the end of education is character, then the prerequisite would be to include values-based education as an integral component of the transformation process.
The fact that such emphasis is being placed on education is very positive, but let us get full value for the monies invested by whichever source, for the end results are what will matter to our nation and its citizens.
Therefore let education be for life, not just for making a living.
I am, etc.,
