Security tightens at VMBS champs
published: Thursday | March 4, 2004

FEW CHANGES have been implemented for this year's VMBS-sponsored Boys and Girls Athletics Championships to be staged over four days at the National Stadium starting on March 24.

Chief among them is security measures which will not only restrict knives, bottles and sticks but also the luxury igloos. Speaking at the press conference and launch for the 2004 championships, which was held at Hilton this week, SSP Gaynor said over the years, spectators have used their igloos to take in weapons into the stadium.

"I will assure you our full support at Champs this year", Antonio Gaynor said after ISSA president Clement Radcliffe accused members of the security force at last year's Champs as negligent.

Another change is in the relays, the mile relay athletes will now have to run 700m before they can cut into lane one. Coaches can also register eight persons including four reserves for a relay event,
but the reserve(s) do not neccessary have to come from those
registered.

Meanwhile, 105 schools have registered in phase one of the registration section. Phase two of the registration process will close on Monday 8 at 4:00 p.m., and ISSA had made it clear that no late entry will be accepted.

In giving a budget of Champs 2004, which he said would run over $12 million, Radcliffe asked for more support.

Grants and awards this year will amount to more than $400,000.
