A tale of two Mayors
published: Monday | March 8, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS just so amazing that here are two individuals who have come from extremely humble beginnings, risen to become chairman of their respective municipalities in Mayor McKenzie's case it is the Kingston & St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) and in Mayor Morgan's case it is the Westmoreland Parish Council. Yet there is a stark difference in the quality of their performance.

Mayor McKenzie is forthright, serious about making meaningful changes for the upliftment of Kingston & St. Andrew, fearless about carrying out his duties; and here we have the only PNP Mayor in Jamaica, an attorney-at-law by credentials, who seems to spend most of his time and energies attacking Member of Parliament for Central Westmoreland, the esteemed Dr. Karl Blythe who is now serving his fourth consecutive term as MP and PNP chairman of that constituency.

The town of Savanna-la-mar which I visit every week is in a filthy condition! It is bawling out for Mayoral attention. Can't Mayor Morgan direct some attention to the pressing issues of slimy drains, unkempt embankments, derelict buildings, the limping fire service, street vending, and other obvious problems falling directly under the purview of the Westmoreland Parish Council?

This young man has disappointed many who thought that youth would bring some enthusiasm and dynamism, even appeal to the whole Local Government process. Instead we have been greeted with shame, disgrace and degradation.

Come now, Mayor Morgan, you are not yet out of your first year as Mayor. It is not too late for you to justify the confidence your fellow councillors placed in you and make a turnaround. No less is expected of you. Remember, it is not who can make the loudest noise but who is consistent with progress that eventually wins the race!

I am, etc.,
