THE EDITOR, Sir:
I BELIEVE the overwhelming majority of our fellow Jamaicans are at least silently asking if and when hanging will resume. How long are we allowing a band of bloodthirsty hooligans and cowards to shoot down fellow citizens? The instrument for appropriate action is already on the statute books. All we need is the will to carry out the penalty after due process.
I note with some alarm the 'star' treatment accorded by the media to each mindless act by the hoodlums. Bold and black front page treatment by the newspapers and the visual exhibition of the sickening act by the television. I do believe that this 'star treatment' not only excites these cowards to further acts of violence but attract similar bent minds in their misguided quest for notoriety.
Let the law take its course and the will of the people prevail. This is the only way to deter cowards from their evil ways. Display a superior toughness of mind and a legitimate finality of action and see how quickly they disappear.
We are aware of the cacophony of the 'human rights' reaction. Note when Bush and Blair were convinced of a threat to the security of their people the speed with which they took action. We want action now. We want the media to robustly call for action. Tell the people and the authorities the grave consequence of delayed action. We must not allow a small group of violent criminals to overwhelm us. I conclude with a famous quote: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
I am, etc.,
