Why raise hospital fees?
published: Monday | March 8, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE MINISTER of Health, Hon John Junor, has announced that hospital fees will be going up. This inspite of the fact that 84 per cent of the patients who receive medical attention right now are unable to pay. I fail to understand why, like the land taxes, increases are sought by the Government, when the majority of persons are unable to pay what is required of them now! Where is the logic in that?

The unbearable stress that this is having on the majority is actually making them ill! The pressure that people are under just to find money to buy food and to pay for the high price of electricity etc. is giving them high blood pressure and a level of anxiety that I have never seen before.

It cannot be right for this Government to run the country so badly that they have not got the money to take care of the things that they should, and then turn back on the people and demand more from them. This irresponsible way of running the business of the country must stop.

I am, etc.,

SALLY PORTEOUS

Deputy Mayor of Mandeville
