THE JAMAICA Public Service Company's (JPSCo) campaign to reduce the illegal connections has resulted in 13 arrests, and the removal of 1,626 illegal connections.
A statement issued by JPSCo said, the operations, which were joint efforts between members of the company's Revenue Protection Department (RPD) and police officers from the Mobile Reserve, were carried out in the parishes of St. Andrew, Clarendon and St. Mary.
ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS
The release further stated that the removal of illegal connections during the joint operations is one of a number of strategies that JPSCo employs to minimise the extent of illegal connections and encourage legitimacy among consumers.
The joint operations were not set up to target only illegal customers but also existing customers who are applying underhanded measures to their meters. "During the operations, JPSCo targets those users without contracts as well as legitimate customers who devise various means of tampering and bypassing their meters," the release stated.
JPSCo is warning the public that electricity theft is a criminal offence sentenced for up to five years but also that it is a very perilous practice that can result in the loss of lives and property through electrocutions and fires.
