THE EDITOR, Sir:
ALLENDE BROUGHT about his peaceful Communist Govern-ment in Chile by ballot, not bullet. But, you see, both Marx and Lenin taught that you'll never get the rich to give up their riches and share their wealth willingly, therefore you cannot legislate it. You cannot just pass laws to get them to do it, because they won't stand for it. The rich would rather die than lose their wealth. That's why they fight their wars and send their own sons to die for them! So anyone trying to bring about a peaceful, non-violent communist or socialist revolution is just wishful thinking!
They will use their power and wealth to buy the military and pay them to defend them. This is why so many Fascist take-overs happen. This is why Hitler, Mussolini, Franco and many others came to power. The rich are clever and smart and the best educated and the most influential, and they know how to pull the strings and ropes and how to engineer things. As one writer pointed out, in the late '60s the U.S. was ready for a tough fascist Hitler, a get-tough, law-and-order man with a military coup to put down the radicals and the youth.
Another example, President Hugo Chavez. The poor generally love him and the rich generally hate him, and there's not much middle ground. The United States dislikes him too because he's notoriously anti-American. Our government would probably like to squash him like a bug or impose sanctions on him like they have on Castro's government in Cuba. But there is a problem, for he supplies almost 15 percent of America's oil, so America can't do much against him publicly. But I imagine they have plenty of people there stirring things up clandestinely, trying to convince his own people to overthrow him.
That's a very well-practised ploy of the CIA, one which has worked for them time and time again when comes to getting rid of people and regimes they do not like, so you can't tell me they're not at it again.
Now Haiti! The United States rejected Aristide's pleas for police reinforcements but failed to mediate a power-sharing settlement or arrange a viable alternative leader. Critics said it was a hands-off policy that effectively forced Aristide out.
