Only word to back our views
published: Wednesday | March 10, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE FATE of Mr. Aristide and our real impotence to back our views with anything other than words can be directly related to the fact that we are part of a 'cash poor' region. Individuals and countries have 'pulled themselves up by their boot-straps.' Our challenge is to do the same, and until we do this we will have to take what we know to be disrespect from those to whom we must go from time to time with our begging bowls.

Everyone will have their ideas as to how this can be achieved, but I think that treating each and every person within our boundaries with fairness, love (in its broadest sense), compassion and intelligence will get us where we would like to be.

To our leaders I say, 'it hot but hush' you can move the Carib-bean region to be the Singapore of the Western hemisphere. Hurry up and do this so our people will not have to continue to migrate to the cold, ugly, but intelligently organised countries of the First World where they love each other better than we are loving our own.

I am, etc.,

MAY ALLEN
