Hospital appeals to mother of twins to collect them
published: Wednesday | March 10, 2004

By George Henry, Freelance Writer

SPALDINGS, Clarendon:

PERSONNEL AT the Percy Junor Hospital in Spaldings are appealing to the mother of two new-born babies, said to be twins, to collect the infants, who were abandoned there over the weekend.

According to a senior official at the hospital, the babies, both girls, who appeared to have been delivered a few hours before they were discovered, were found wrapped in a towel in a bathroom at the female Surgical Ward at about 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The health worker stated that the twins, who were not delivered at the hospital's maternity ward, were found by a woman. The infants were found wrapped in a towel and placed on the floor of a bathroom at the hospital.

The hospital representative, who did not want to be identified, said the new-borns were examined by doctors and were in good health. The baby girls were then taken to the children's ward, where they are being kept.

"I am happy that the mother decided to bring the babies here and leave them, rather than throwing them into a pit toilet like some wicked mothers would do," said a nurse at the hospital.

"It was good that she brought them here. Maybe she is not able to properly care for them and so she prefers to leave them so that someone can better care for them."

The Spaldings Police were also made aware of the discovery and officers from that facility went to the hospital to collect statements.

The police are asking persons who may have noticed anyone who might have given birth prior to the discovery of the babies to contact the Spaldings police station, so that the new-borns can be returned to their mothers or arrangements can be made to have an explanation from the individual as to the reasons for abandoning the twins.

It is the first time that a set of twins has ever been abandoned at the Percy Junor Hospital, said a nurse, who pointed out that she has been working at the facility for more than 15 years.
