Court papers destroyed in fire
published: Friday | March 12, 2004

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

YESTERDAY'S FIRE which destroyed stored documents at the Spanish Town courthouse will have an adverse impact on local cases, court staff said.

The court building at White Church Street was gutted by an electrical fire, forensics experts have determined.

According to Clerk of Court Jeremy Taylor, the fire will have a devastating effect on cases before the courts. He told The Gleaner that files destroyed cover civil, criminal, traffic, estate and probate and family matters. He said that the only files saved were those in his possession for the day's sitting.

Senior Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar Gayle, who had a meeting with Chief Justice Lensley Wolfe, told The Gleaner that the court will be rebuilding case files.

"We will have to have dialogue with the police who have copies of files in some cases such as civil. The attorneys will have copies and will assist the court."
