Cut the 'buy vote fund'
published: Friday | March 12, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE RECENT uproar in the House of Representatives created by the Minister of Finance cutting the allocations to Social Economic Support Programme (SESP) just goes to show what is important to some of our representatives.

The fact is that the government is in a very challenging financial position and everyone has had to endure cuts, but heaven forbid he should cut the 'buy vote fund'. That may cause the collapse of the nation.

The MPs are contending that the government is reneging on its commitment in the budget. Hello!! That is the norm for all of us who depend on budgetary allocations. I work in the government sector and for the last three years we have not received the amount promised to us in the budget. The government has owed me retroactive monies that I had already WORKED for, for 12 months.

The MPs must realise that 'time hard' and we all have to make sacrifices to hopefully create a better future and if that means a reduction in the 'buy vote fund' then that's the sacrifice they will have to make. Welcome to the real Jamaica, MPs.

I am, etc.,
