What's the big deal about Haiti?
published: Sunday | March 14, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM deeply annoyed about the Haitian crisis that seems to be headed to Jamaica.

The decisions taken by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson to host Mr Aristide and the $35 million to build shelters for the Haitian refugees is a stark reminder that our priorities are not right and lack regard or respect for the people of Jamaica.

The decision to host Mr Aristide should be put to the people and debated extensively before extending an invitation.

The public should have a say, because any backlash from this very long visit will affect the people. There are so many needy situations in Jamaica and the common cry is there is no money and we are facing money issues

However, the Government will construct shelters for Haitians, while Jamaica's mentally ill and homeless including children are left on the streets. One wonders what the motives of these decisions are.

What is the big deal about Haiti? There are other CARICOM countries that are better able to financially deal with the problems and issues of Haiti.

Jamaica has major issues that need attention, Mr. Patterson.

I am, etc,
