published: Sunday | March 14, 2004

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas, CMC:

VERONICA CAMPBELL ran a 2004 world best 22.43 seconds in the women's 200 metres and Candice Scott was weight-throw winner as the Caribbean landed two gold medals at the US National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division One Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday night.

Jamaica's Campbell, representing the hosts, the University of Arkansas, won her race ahead of Jamaica-born American Sanya Richards, while Scott, of Trinidad and Tobago, won the weight throw gold at 23.05m.

THIRD CARIB MEDAL

There was a third Caribbean medal when Jamaican Aundre Edwards took bronze in the men's long jump at 7.97m.

Campbell, a former World Junior sprint double champion, also earned a collegiate record with her 22.44-second run, ahead of the fast-finishing Richards, who tied the old record at 22.49.

American Muna Lee, the previous record holder, was fifth in 22.87, just behind reigning Pan Am Games 100-metre champion and teammate Lauryn Williams, who got fourth in 22.79 seconds.

Campbell, with a 7.27 clocking, and T&T's Fana Ashby (7.30), made their way to last night's 60m final.

In another final, Jamaican Andrea Bliss clocked 8.14 seconds for fifth in the women's 60m hurdles, won by Priscilla Lopes (7.96).
