THE EDITOR, Sir:
AFTER LEARNING of the fire at the Spanish Town court office, I considered it to be a case of our utter worthlessness, that in this day and age the matter of court records and other papers necessary to safeguard the historic and sacred documents of the people of Jamaica be destroyed by fire. The people of Jamaica continue to be beset by a level of incompetence that is record-setting at every turn.
Not only is the fact that records pertaining to national security are destroyed, but the fact that no proper safeguard for peoples genealogical records, implies that the state does not consider such information of significant value to ensure their survival. We continue to not only ignore our history by destroying the records of the past, but now in our negligence add to the void that makes up our collective past.
Is it any wonder that our children make up their own moralities and standards, because we are too busy finding money to put food on the table, or they adopt the MTV lifestyle and media values. We are ensuring our certain return to servitude in the new global enterprise. Our cultural values are our history, and if we do not preserve them, somebody else will do so for us. Wasn't that the lesson of slavery?
