Grandmothers of Jamaica Day
published: Monday | March 15, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:
THROUGH YOUR valuable paper, and columns I wish to propose and recommend the setting aside of a day of recognition for our wonderful Jamaica grandmothers. the Jamaican grandmother is truly unique. I propose that the day be called/named 'Grandmothers of Jamaica Day'.
The reasoning behind this proposal, is the fact that some 70 per cent of our Jamaica grandmothers have either reared/brought-up their grandchildren or played a pivotal role in the up bringing of thousands of our Jamaican children, now adults, and continue to do so.
It is therefore time to recognise these stalwart women of Jamaica, before many more pass on. I would like to see a Sunday in June of each year set aside to pay homage to our Jamaican grandmothers, allow me to recommend that the first Sunday in June 2004 be the commencement.
I truly trust that my proposal will meet with the approval and support from the many that can testify to the value of the Jamaican Grandmother.
I am, etc.,
