Crab in a barrel
published: Thursday | March 18, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I FOOLED myself into thinking that - just this once - the JLP, in principle would close ranks with the PNP government; and speak with one voice in addressing the crisis in Haiti. But true to their character the 'high ups"-in the JLP, continue their divisive, "oppose, oppose" tactics.

Mr. Seaga from his pronouncements agrees with the USA position that the removal of Mr. Bertrand Aristide, the democratically elected president of Haiti, is justified as he "has not governed democratically".

The JLP "high ups" are saying that the PNP has a sinister motive for having Mr. Aristide stay in Jamaica. We have Mr. Golding and Mr. Audley Shaw point their accusatory fingers at the PNP. These two take the position that the government allowed Mr. Aristide to stay in Jamaica to cause distraction /diversion to the expected property tax increase in the Budget. Does the frustration with losing so many times by the ballot now cause these men to wish that the people would take to the streets to bring down the PNP?

The squabbling "crab in a barrel" syndrome in the JLP is more a divergence than Mr. Aristide's visit. The PNP is sitting comfortably knowing that the JLP's leadership is their best ally.

We do need a change, but the JLP under the present leadership (Seaga, Golding and Shaw) show time and again they are not ready to lead. The only way this bunch will form the next government of Jamaica, is, if Washington carries out 'An Aristide' (remove of an elected leader from office) on Jamaica.

I am, etc.,
