Rejection against our own
published: Monday | March 22, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

REGARDING THE Aristide situation, it is appalling that some Jamaicans have responded in such a negative way to offering hospitality to Mr. Aristide and his family and also the rest of our Haitian brothers and sisters in their time of crisis.

Some of us may remember the Jewish holocaust when all the nations of the world turned their backs on the Jewish people, thus allowing Adolf Hitler to eliminate over six million innocent Jews as well as a fair number of other people who restricted his demonic scheme. The same mentality of rejection and selfishness now exists among us, directed against our own.

What is interesting is that at least 90 per cent of us are professed Christians and many hold prominent positions in the House of God. I must ask where is our agape love? Where is our compassion?

The Bible tells us that Jesus, our High Priest, is touched by the feeling of our infirmity, which should be interpreted as any adverse situation. That holds good until the end of time. All the political jargon that has been coming forth is only intended to vindicate us from our God-oriented responsibility to be our brothers' keeper.

I would like to hail Prime Minister P.J. Patterson for the action he has taken in this situation. He is a man of principle and stamina, and above all, has shown that he is a man of God.

For Mr. Aristotle, I continue in prayer for him and his family that all will go well. I also pray for the rest of the Haitian people, both here and in Haiti that things will settle down.

Mr. Aristide will be restored. Our times are in God's hands.

I am, etc.,

SALOME MILLER (Mrs.)

Boscobel P.O.

St. Mary
