Annoyed at Schools Challenge
published: Tuesday | March 23, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

KINDLY GRANT me space in your valuable newspaper, The Gleaner, to voice my disgust concerning the Schools' Challenge Quiz on TVJ.

I have been watching Schools' Challenge Quiz from its inception, and I have always enjoyed doing this. But recently, I find myself getting rather annoyed quite often during the presentation of most of the shows. Some reasons for my annoyance are as follows:

Firstly, sometimes the questions are not clearly presented to the students, thereby delaying an answer within the specified time. Secondly, too often when an answer is given, the presenter seems not to be sure if the answer is correct or incorrect, thereby wasting precious time mumbling before moving on to the next question. Thirdly, I am of the opinion that the students fail to answer some Spanish and French questions because the pronunciation of some of the words given by the quiz presenter is strange to them. Of course, there has been incorrect pronunciation of other words too, especially some words from the Bible.

Lastly, I wonder why there are so many discrepancies when some answers are given. Why, for example, are there so many corrections and changes concerning the scoring of the points? Isn't the answer to each question given to the Quiz Master or Mistress and judges before the start of the competition?

Mr. Editor, I do believe that the public deserves better.

By the way, where is the former Quiz Master, Dervan Malcolm.

I am, etc.,
