A step in the right direction

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE INITIATIVE of the Adult Continuing Education programme, launched on Thursday, March 18, 2004 by Dr. Omar Davies is definitely a step in the right direction. A step not only towards increasing educational opportunities for the inner cities, but it is also a very significant testimony of the much-needed mobilisation of efforts for a specific cause. This is so considering the level of support reported, in the form of university student volunteers and corporate sponsorships.
The example of initiating partnerships for a cause needs to be adopted and magnified to address the wider degree of problems out there. The ACE programme should therefore be an excellent case study as to how we all can partner in addressing specific problems especially within inner-city areas, a partnership absorbing private sector, public sector, students and Jamaicans abroad.
I therefore commend the initiative, and ask for a vision of continuity of programmes of this nature across the island. As a Jamaican, I would like also to express thanks, giving commendation and encouragement to the sponsors and the university volunteers who have displayed a sense of national responsibility.
I am, etc.,
