THE MARITIME Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) has received International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) certification, which stamps the international seal of quality on its operations.
International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) certification means that the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), which is the government's maritime regulatory agency that also operates the Jamaica Ship Registry, is using standards, procedures and systems recognised internationally.
ASSESSMENT
Director-General of the MAJ, Rear Admiral Peter Brady, explains that the ISO required an assessment to be carried out by an external agency and the American Bureau of Shipping had conducted the Maritime Authority of Jamaica's assessment.
"It means all our systems, policies, procedures and systems for certification of seafarers, port state control activities, registrations of ships and survey of ships are certified," he explains.
The MAJ was established under the Shipping Act of 1998 to pursue the development of shipping, among other things.
