THE APPLETON Jamaica Estate V/X-sponsored 'Living Legends' shows were launched at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston on Monday night.
The series of shows, conceptualised by music veteran Byron Lee, will see performances from some of the Caribbean's greatest musicians. The line-ups will see Jamaican music stalwarts Leighton 'Pluto' Shervington, Winston 'Merritone' Blake, Ken Lazarus, Keith Lyn and Ernie Smith.
From the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, calypsonians David Rudder, The Mighty Sparrow and Calypso Rose will further add to the musical treats. Of course, Byron Lee will be accompanied by the immortal Dragonaires and to say that 'good music' is expected, would be an understatement. The first show is on April 15 on the lawns of Kings House, St. Andrew.
Together, these artistes have over 400 years in the music business and as Michael Anthony Cuffe made a brief verbal presentation on each one, you realised just why their hits from yesteryear remain on the airwaves today. Guests can expect to hear songs such as Empty Chair (Keith Lyn), Saltfish (Sparrow) Cecelia (Ken Lazarus), I Man Born Ya (Pluto), Life Is Just For Living (Ernie Smith), High Mas (David Rudder), Fire in me wire (Calypso Rose) and sweet, sweet melodies from Merritone Disco. According to Lisa Bell, brand manager for Appleton Estate V/X, the concept of the shows is "to honour and celebrate the accomplishments of musical legends from the Caribbean."
Speaking at the launch attended by members of the media, J. Wray and Nephew and curious onlookers, Minister of Industry and Tourism Aloun Assamba praised Byron Lee for his idea.
"I want to commend Byron Lee, himself a living legend, for developing the concept of this historic concert event which will honour stalwarts of the Caribbean music fraternity," she said.
She had equal praise for Appleton for sponsoring the event, saying that Appleton was more than a delightful drink, but an integral part of Jamaica's tourism product. She also cemented her ministry's support of the event, as they see "where it will be instrumental in fostering greater cooperation among Caribbean musicians and entertainers."
