Pit latrines not acceptable in 2004
published: Thursday | March 25, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE just read an article about pit latrines and that some 'director' in the Ministry of Health thinks 41 per cent of Jamaica still using them is acceptable, in 2004.

Years ago on a programme (RJR) another Ministry of Health official made a statement that it was better for students to have computers rather than functioning toilets.

Things such as these just show the reason why Jamaica can't move forward faster. Instead of voicing concern and making suggestions as to how the level of pit latrine usage can be reduced the representative from the Ministry sees this percentage as acceptable.

I believe that we (Jamaicans) NEED people with VISION, and the system needs to hold people responsible when they have positions of authority and accept below par situations that affect the lives of the citizens.

I am, etc.,
