Who will watch the watchers?
published: Friday | March 26, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHAT COMFORT can the families of Michael Gayle and Janice Allen take? There is a long history of these cases being unsuccessful but it seems nothing has changed regarding their investigation or prosecution.

The Jamaican Constabulary cannot police itself. The co-ordination between them and the DPP's office leads to significant delay. Delay in prosecution and ineptitude in investigation can have only one conclusion.

We need a dedicated independent agency to investigate and prosecute police misconduct. The investigative agents should have the power of arrest. Legal officers would advise on prosecution and prosecute.

I am, etc.,
