THE EDITOR, Sir:
AMIDST ALL the doom and gloom that hangs over Jamaica like a thick unyielding cloud, bright and beautiful children like Kacey-Ann and Danielle of Wolmer's and Immaculate Girl schools, have still managed to shine through our little rays of sunshine.
The sky is the limit for these children and if they can achieve in this country, then they have very little competition anywhere else.
Let me say for the record that I have always favoured Wolmer's over most traditional high schools for the simple reason that the school adds value. Wolmer's children, like St. Andrew for Girls for the most part, are average children but by the time they are prepared for CXC they are operating in the distinction mode. The schools which attract the creme de la creme of students en masse their students turn out either predictably, i.e., as well as they went in or some less than they went in; where is the value-added in that?
Again, I congratulate these two children. Danielle for her frank revelation about her 20 per cent grade in math only three years ago, but her perseverance and quickening tossed her into an arena where the sky is the limit. This will encourage others not to give up and should be a wake-up call to teachers who are quick to give up on students and Wolmer's for its value-added system.
I do hope when teachers are getting salaries short that Wolmer's Girls' and Boys' teachers are not among that lot it's time the Ministry of Education sit up and take a close look at what is happening in the schools at close range.
I invite Professor Thompson to study the Wolmer's teaching system and suggest the method to other schools.
I am, etc.,
