'One Love' set to woo audiences
published: Thursday | April 1, 2004

THOSE WHO have begun to think that they were waiting in vain can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the movie One Love starring Kymani Marley and Cherine Anderson will finally grace our cinemas.

The movie will premiere at the Island Cinema, New Kingston on Monday, April 5, followed by general release on April 7, while it is scheduled to premiere in the United Kingdom toward the end of July.

The Romeo and Juliet type story plays on Rasta versus Christian dynamic Rastaman Kassa (Marley) and a Pentecostal girl, Serena (Anderson) falling in love.

Based on a concept created by Yvonne Deustchman, One Love was first born as a play. The screenplay was written by Trevor Rhone. Rhone has previously written Smile Orange, Milk and Honey and also shared writing duties for The Harder They Come. Directed by Don Letts and Rick Elgwood (the duo which directed Dancehall Queen), One Love was shot, largely in Port Antonio last year. It was created through a co-production treaty between the United Kingdom and Norway.

POPULAR JAMAICAN ACTORS

One Love's cast features a slew of popular Jamaican actors and other personalities. The cast listing includes Mutabaruka, Winston 'Bello' Bell, Carl Bradshaw, Chris Daley, Jerry D, Michael Nicholson and Rosemarie Murray.

Since its creation, it has been busy doing the festival rounds. One Love premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France last May, says Yvonne Deustchman. Since that premier, One Love featured in an additional five festivals for 2003.

In August it featured in the Nordic Film Festival while September brought the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie also featured in the Oslo Film Festival in October. Last year also saw One Love as the opening film at the Monaco Film Festival and the closing film at the African Diaspora Film Festival.

CLOSING FILM

Starting off with being chosen as the closing film at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles last February, One Love is again scheduled for much festival participation this year. April will see the movie as the closing night film at the Vues d'Afrique Film Festival in Montreal,Canada while in May it will journey to Georgia where it will be the opening night film at the Caribbean Film Festival.
