Jamaica tops Carib sugar producers

THE SUGAR Association of the Caribbean (SAC) has reported that Jamaica was the leading Caribbean sugar producer for the month of February.

In a release last week, it said that Jamaica produced 42,412 tonnes of sugar followed by Guyana with 41,205 tonnes.

Belize produced 20,517 tonnes and Trinidad 10,756 tonnes.

Production by the six SAC member countries for the current crop exceeded 300,000 tonnes at the end of February, making 359,384 the number of tonnes of sugar produced between July 2003 and February 2004.
