RESEARCH AND Development in Education 1997 to 2002 is a record of the published and unpublished research and development work of members of staff of the Institute of Education at the UWI, Mona.
The book, which is now available at the Publications office of the Institute of Education at Mona, was compiled to mark the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of the Institute. During much of the five-year period under review, Professor Errol Miller was head of the Department.
Joan Tucker, head of the Institute of Education since 2002, conceived the project and made it a priority. Other members of staff helped to further develop the concept and form.
Recently retired former senior lecturer in Social Studies Education in the Institute of Education, Dr. Ruby King, designed, compiled and edited the book, with the assistance of other members of staff.
COLLABORATIONS
Dr. King told The Gleaner that some of the publications and a few of the projects are collaborative work. "Sometimes," she commented, "the collaboration involved members of staff from other departments, particularly the Department of Educational Studies and the Centre for Gender Studies."
In the foreword to the publication UWI Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal Kenneth Hall writes: "The Institute of Education has compiled an impressive collection of abstracts that describes the institute's projects, their findings and outcomes, including published and unpublished work that speaks to the overall research thrust of the university."
THE FOUNDATION
The first Director of the Institute of Education was Hugh Worrel Springer. He, with Elsa Walters, Reginald Murray and Dudley Grant, laid the foundations and charted the course of the Institute during its early years. In Springer's words: "the Institute is not only a department in the University, it has the special character of being also an association, in which the University, the governments, the training colleges and the teaching profession pool resources to help one another achieve the highest professional standards in the educational services given to our several communities.
The book explains that much of the work of the Institute is carried out through research and development projects, many of which are funded.
The primary objective of the research projects is the investigation of educational phenomena, while development projects focus on the development of a process or product for implementation in the school system or for teacher education.
The research projects carried out by the staff of the institute fall into three main categories:
Exploring the Context of
Education
Investigating Curriculum
Innovation and
Development
Supporting the
Development of Teacher
Education
Members of staff of the institute have also produced textbooks for children in the school system and for student teachers in teachers' colleges.
