LETTER OF THE DAY - Marketing and developing the Jamaican brand
published: Sunday | April 4, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FIRST OF all, kudos to the excellent articles and stories of The Sunday Gleaner. You keep looking better all the time.

Last Sunday's headline and story was fascinating. I certainly hope the powers that be really take serious measures to protect the Jamaican brand.

Sunday night's broadcast of Britney Spears concert on MTV2 featured Jamaican music (and colours and dance moves). Britney and Jamaica? Great! How about the countless movies featuring Jamaican themes. I am positive that it is far more than any other Caribbean territory. Cuba is nearby somewhere.

I see even Barbie advertisement featuring "Jamaica mon"! I believe we are living in exciting and potentially money-making times.

(Idea: Is anybody archiving all this? I know The Gleaner does this to an extent. But does a compilation exist?)

If only the people with influence could maximise our already tremendous potential for greatness. Jamaica reeks of creative energy.

We are a melting pot of unique and diverse cultures. We have a special energy and vibes that the world wants and craves for.

Bottom line, let there be a relentless approach to the continuous development and marketing of the best of Jamaica, whether it be artists, professionals, food, or art and crafts just anything JAMAICAN. That will be our gold mine that can never be exhausted.

The benefits of which can help to make us better and proud of our heritage.

I am, etc.

A SERIOUS JAMAICAN
