THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM quite appalled at the decision taken by our Government to host former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
The question I would like to ask is 'Is Jamaica financially secure to take on such a responsibility?' I would also like to know his (Aristide's) motive for visiting.
I know that our Prime Minister being the chairman for CARICOM would like to show some form of courtesy to Mr. Aristide since Haiti is a part of CARICOM. But we have to face the reality that we were not prepared to take on such an enormous responsibility.
In terms of the large influx of Haitian refugees, I am glad that we did not turn our backs on them.
But I strongly believe their approximate length of stay is too long. While Jamaica is offering help to the Haitians we must take into consideration that we have our own problems to solve.
I am etc,
