Warning for exploitative leadershp
published: Monday | April 5, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ARISTIDE WAS democratically elected, but he did not govern democratically. The police were poorly equipped when Aristide's chimeres were armed with heavy weapons. There is not a person killed by chimeres that get arrested, they kill to protect democracy the Aristide way.

The action of the Haitian people to revolt against former president Aristide was to set an example to all the Caribbean's democratically elected officials, that 'democracy' is not a licence to violate people's rights. Officials are elected to deliver promises after elections, and if you fail to deliver, you must step down.

Mr. Nixon was democratically elected, but because of his action in the Watergate scandal they asked him to step down. Therefore, all elected officials should govern themselves accordingly, with respect, transparency and dignity.

I am, etc.,
