Suggestions to fight crime
published: Thursday | April 8, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Suggestion systems are commonly used in businesses to solicit ideas from employees on how to make their processes more efficient and thereby improve the performance of the business. This process is effective because people who are exposed to the processes on a daily basis have a better understanding than the managers on how the system works, especially under unusual conditions.

The crime rate in Jamaica has been high for too long now and although the Government of Jamaica is trying its best to do something about it, it appears as if very little has changed.

With all the best intentions in this world, neither the Minister of National Security nor the Police Commissioner alone can solve this problem. Further, I do not think that any one solution can do the trick. I believe that
we can find some answers by using the "Suggestion System Approach".

This approach is really to go out in targeted communities around Jamaica and get ideas from community members on ways of solving crimes in their community. However for this exercise to be useful, the government must be willing to employ the necessary experts to do this work.

I believe that all problems can be solved and sometimes the solution comes from people you least expect to have the solution.

I am, etc.,
