Equal treatment from police
published: Thursday | April 8, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Until each and every individual is treated with respect and as human beings by our security forces, fighting crime will be an impossible task.

Until the 'haves' experience the brutality of the police force, the 'have-nots' will continue to be harassed, abused, brutalised, and even killed innocently.

There is a class division in Jamaica, which is causing justice to be an elusive dream in this small island. People do not seem to realise that the police need the "have-nots" on their side to fight crime.

Poor people, who form the majority in Jamaica, are seeing a clear pattern of preferential respect towards the rich and fortunate people.

Poor people are the only ones being harassed, abused, and killed in cold blood.

We must appreciate the efforts made by groups such as Jamaicans for Justice, FAST, and JCHR in the fight against injustice in our country.

I hope we don't have to wait for a well-known 'big wig' to be brutalised, abused or killed by our security forces for this issue to be addressed on a national level.

I am, etc.,
