Status of a murder case
published: Thursday | April 8, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

On January 23, 2004, a shooting occurred at the Odeon Cineplex in Mandeville, Manchester. One Damion Watson, a health officer in the Health Department in the parish was killed. I have been trying to follow - from a distance - the reports on the on-going investigations. I am unsure if I missed any new development in the case. Could someone having knowledge of the status of the proceedings contact me?

In the story carried in The Gleaner of January 28, 2004, it is stated that George Henry contributed to the piece. There was also mention that Deputy Superintendent of Police Horace Sangster, who was present at a protest regarding this shooting, indicated that the investigation was being conducted into the incident.

It would be greatly appreciated if these gentlemen or anyone else attached to this investigation can shed some light on the situation.

In Damion Watson, we had an astute student who achieved much in his educational life. He was ambitious, industrious and creative in his technical as well as professional pursuits. His self-assurance and calm disposition were legendary, even to people who were his seniors.

Damion, or Donovan as he was fondly called, exemplified that section of our National Pledge, which says: "... I promise to stand up for Justice, Brother-hood and Peace, to work diligently and creatively, to think generously and honestly, so that Jamaica may, under God, increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity, and play her part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race."

We should all strive to ensure that the authorities put the time and resources in completing this investigation. Damion's memory deserves this. May his soul rest in peace.

I am, etc.,
