'Expect more big sponsorships'
published: Thursday | April 8, 2004

By Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

JAMAICA FOOTBALL Federation president Crenston Boxhill has promised the nation that sponsorships like the unprecedented $75 million push that Red Stripe recently provided to the Reggae Boyz will not be isolated incidents.

It has been a concern that Boxhill, while providing a change from the former Captain Horace Burrell-led regime, would not be able to run the JFF as a business and provide the Jamaicans with the same type of push that is needed to propel them back among the top 32 in the world.

However, since the revelation of his administration's manifesto and his consequent rise to the head of the JFF, Boxhill has shown himself to be as influential and as wily as his predecessor.

Holding two relatively high-profile international friendlies for the senior team and providing adequate match practice for the seniors, Boxhill seems to be on the right path.

The problem thus far is the huge debt that his administration inherited.

With that in mind, last week the Jamaican public was given a sneak preview into the fund-raising potential of the man at the helm when the JFF procured what is potentially a $100 million sponsorship deal with beer company giant Red Stripe.

After an elaborate press conference hosted by Red Stripe to announce the occasion, the JFF boss told The Gleaner to look out for more of the same.

"I've always said that even prior to the elections we were in constant dialogue with companies like this. The discussions from then were always positive and from then until now it's been getting better and better," Boxhill said.

"Red Stripe is the very first one to come on board and they have come on board in a very significant way and, like I said earlier on in my address, this shows the confidence that a company like Red Stripe has in this administration and in the Reggae Boyz product.

"Therefore I have no doubt that, based on discussions I have been having over the past couple of months, soon and very soon we are going to be having more press conferences of this nature," said the JFF boss.
