HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC:

JAMAICAN USAIN Bolt smashed the World Junior Record for 200 metres when he won the Boys' Under-20 200 metres in 19.93 seconds at the CARIFTA Games yesterday afternoon.

The phenomenal Bolt, only 17 years old, significantly lowered the previous world mark of 20.13 seconds he shared with American Roy Martin with a stunning effort at the National Sports Centre.

UNCHALLENGED

He was unchallenged in victory and appeared to be running easily as he crossed the line.

The effort is also the fastest by any athlete so far this year, surpassing American Justin Gatlin as the world leader, and is the first sub-20 second clocking by any athlete including seniors in almost two years.

Gatlin had become the world leader on Saturday with a 20.21 victory at the Sea Ray Relays.

Last July at the Pan Am Juniors in Barbados, Bolt had equalled Martin's 18-year-old mark of 20.13 seconds, but now claims the record for himself
