Better ways to control speed
published: Friday | April 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE ALLOW me space in your paper to express my thoughts on the proposed speed control devices. Here in Orlando the Department of Transportation has installed several of these signs around the city, they relay your speed to you as you approach. The younger drivers especially try to see how fast they can go before they reach the signs. This has not turned out to be a deterrent, but an enabler of the problem.

Controlling traffic speed and accidents related to same, is a concern all over the world. It seems that the method with the best results has been education. Excessive fines have also been a deterrent.

I am, etc.,
