THE STANDING Committee of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) at its weekly meeting on Tuesday expressed satisfaction with the fact that Minister of Local Government Portia Simpson Miller had responded out of conscience to repeated calls from the JLP to address as a matter of urgency, the crisis of personnel and equipment facing the Jamaica Fire Service.
In a release issued today, the JLP said that since the start of the year, repeated calls have been made by the party's spokesman on Local Govern-ment Pearnel Charles, in and out of the House of Representatives, as well as from Generation 2000 (G2K), the party's associate body of young professionals, for the Government to move speedily to address the crisis facing the fire service. To date, the party says, these calls have been met with little response.
The JLP says it is pleased that a senior member of the Government has now accepted what has been obvious for some time and has chosen to break ranks with the Government and side with the Opposition on this matter.
In light of this new development, the JLP is again calling on the Government to respond to the present crisis in the fire service by allocating the necessary funds to ensure its ability to protect life and property across the country.
