ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (AP):

WEST INDIES captain Brian Lara will miss the first three one-day internationals against England to rest a fractured finger, the West Indies Cricket Board announced yesterday.

Lara, who scored a world best 400 not out in the fourth Test which finished on Wednesday, has been advised by doctors to rest for 10 days.

Lara injured the little finger on his right hand while dropping a catch in the opening Test of the series in Jamaica a month ago.

He continued playing, and led the West Indies through the entire series, which England won 3-0. But after persistent pain, Lara sought more medical attention during the final day's play of the fourth match on Wednesday.

Vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan will lead the home side for the first time in his career in the first match of the one-day series on Sunday in Georgetown, Guyana.

Lara will remain with the squad, and travel to Guyana to help the team prepare.

The next two one-dayers are in Lara's home country, Trinidad, on April 24 and 25. Lara is expected back for the fourth match, in Grenada, on April 28.
