Man held for plot to kill RM, bomb threats
published: Saturday | April 17, 2004

THE HALF-WAY Tree police have detained a man for questioning in relation to several bomb scares at the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court earlier this week.

The man, who is from Temple Hall in St. Andrew, is also being questioned regarding an alleged plot to kill the Senior Resident Magistrate, Martin Gayle, who yesterday ordered the extradition of a Bahamian national in connection with the importation of cocaine into the United States.

It is understood that 24-hour security has since been accorded to RM Gayle and his family.

According to the Half-Way Tree police, the detainee, who chauffeurs the wife of Bahamian Sherwin Emmanuel, was also taken before the Traffic Court yesterday where he paid some $14,000 in fines for traffic breaches.

Emmanuel, who was represented in court by attorney-at-law Frank Phipps Q.C., is to be extradited to the US which wants him tried on conspiracy to import cocaine into the country.

Yesterday, Senior Superintendent Kelvin Knight, Commanding Officer of the St. Andrew Central Division, confirmed there were several bomb scares at the court. He said, however, that the police did not find any explosives after bomb experts combed the court and its precincts.
