Simpson Miller had the option to resign
published: Sunday | April 18, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE always warmed to Minister Portia Simpson Miller because I believe that she genuinely has a real concern for the poor. Regrettably, there has been nothing done by her which can be held up as a manifestation of that concern.

Visit her constituency which she has held for almost 30 years during two People's National Party and one Jamaica Labour Party administrations and one will be left to marvel at how such a caring individual has allowed her loyal voters to exist in such decadence. It is about leadership that transcends hugs, smiles and prepared speeches.

Last Wednesday, the minister whilst in charge of the government in the absence of the Prime Minister could not vote with that very government and does not understand that, were she the Prime Minister and did that she would be obliged to resign.

As a senior Cabinet Minister who helped to fashion the government's budget she has an obligation to resign if the budget is one which she believes demonstrates a lack of concern for Jamaicans. But that would be leadership!

I have never heard her put forward one thought as to how to take the poor out of their misery but she is adept at stating how miserable are the conditions under which the poor live.

Mrs. Simpson Miller has shown that the Peter Principle is still alive. She has been elevated beyond her capacity and does not understand that if she goes further it will be disastrous for Jamaica.

Portia, face life, you may be popular but you just don't have leadership qualities. Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller? Lord help us!

I am, etc.,

ANNIE SPENCER
