Jones Town curfew lifted
published: Monday | April 19, 2004

A CURFEW which was imposed in sections of Jones Town, south St. Andrew, on Friday, was lifted at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, the Constabulary Communication Network reported.

However, Supt. Gary Griffiths, head of the Kingston Western Police Division, said that the police were continuing operations in the area.

The curfew was part of attempts by the police to contain the restiveness, which has been escalating in the community since two of its residents were killed on April 9 in what the police said was the result of a struggle for leadership of the community.

Dr. Omar Davies, the Member of Parliament for St. Andrew South, also met with residents of Jones Town on Friday and encouraged them to maintain peace.

It has been reported that men aligned to a group called "Fire Squad" have been signalling that area leader George Phang, and his brother, Andrew, should leave the area.

On Saturday, Jones Town residents told The Gleaner that the tension had been eased since the police presence was increased in the community.
