'Garth Rattray too young to know'
published: Monday | April 19, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

GARTH RATTRAY is too young to know the origins of the daytime radio drama 'Portia faces Life'. This was a 'Grace Gibson' radio production coming to us all the way from Australia. It was aired at about 10:30 in the morning, week days on Radio Jamaica and Rediffusion, sponsored by Colgate Palmolive, makers of 'Fab' detergent.

The advert was one of the earliest to utilise Jamaican talent with the patois verbiage. "I put de clothes in de pan to soak, cho man, you running joke, soaking alone can't mek clothes clean, cum ova de yawd an see wha mi mean.

'MOVE DE GREASE'

Mi sheet an mi frack me nevva scrub, me gee Tom dutty wuk shut likkle rub, an de cuff an de colla to move de grease, an Fab do de rest ah de work wid ease. Fabfor a whole tub ah clothes tek my advice, wash wid Fab an yu wash is clean, Fab wash smell nice, Fab washes bright... ease yuhself mi chile, wash wid Fab."

I am, etc.,
