Taylor's double lifts MetroStars
published: Monday | April 19, 2004

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (AP):

JAMAICAN INTERNATIONAL made a sensational appearance for United States Major League Soccer franchise New York/New Jersey MetroStars, coming off the bench to score twice in a 3-2 win over former champions D.C. United.

Reserve forward Taylor, recently signed from Jamaican premier league club Harbour View, scored two goals in a 13-minute span of the second half for the MetroStars on Saturday.

John Wolyniec also scored for the MetroStars while Ben Olsen opened the scoring for D.C. United, who got their other goal from 14-year-old Freddy Adu, who dominated the headlines for scoring his first professional goal.

Adu, the youngest player in a major U.S. pro league in more than a century, did not start but replaced Alecko Eskandarian in the 54th minute and scored in the 75th.

"It's a great feeling to get my first goal, but it's a little unfortunate to do it on a losing day," Adu said. "I didn't get a chance to celebrate because we lost. Hopefully, this will lead to bigger and better things and there will be plenty more to come."

Adu thrilled the crowd of 31,149 when he sneaked behind two defenders to take a crossing pass from Joshua Gros and knocked a sliding, left-footed shot past Jonny Walker.

"Every player wants that first goal, because it opens everything else up. It also makes it more special coming here," Adu said.

In Chicago, Edward Johnson had a goal and an assist to help the Dallas Burn beat the Chicago Fire 2-0 on Saturday night.

Bobby Rhine also scored for Dallas (1-0-1).

Chicago (0-1-2), with Jamaicans Andy Williams and Rookie of the Year Damani Ralph, has failed to score in its first three games. The Fire opened with scoreless ties against Kansas City and San Jose.

Johnson opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and Rhine made it 2-0 in the 70th. In Denver, Carlos Ruiz scored in the 20th minute to help Tyrone Marshall's Los Angeles Galaxy tie the Colorado Rapids 1-1 on Saturday night.

Colorado's Jean-Phillippe Peguero opened the scoring in the ninth minute on a header off Antonio de la Torre's corner kick.
