When is rape taken out of context?
published: Tuesday | April 20, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS IS an open letter to Amina Blackwood Meeks:

While I agree with you that "Sister Rita is Right, anytime you choose to tell your story it is still your story and it does not change with the passage of time." When and how one chooses to tell one's story may influence the believability of that story.

When I read the report in the paper, I dismissed it because I could not believe that Rita Marley would be accusing her husband (matters not who he is) of rape when he was not in a position to defend himself.

When I read her reply to the report I realised it was not mischief. I am however extremely disheartened by her reported reply that she was taken out of context. I wondered how does anyone take rape out of context and in any event, Rita Marley was not reported as saying what was the context she was taken out of.

I am, etc.,

ROBERT GALLIMORE
