NEARLY 43,000 Jamaicans have visited the Logos II floating book shop since it docked at the Caribbean Cement Rockfort pier in Kingston just over two weeks ago. In fact, about half that number went on board over the Easter weekend, most of whom comprised students and church groups.
According to David Waugh, co-ordinator for the Kingston leg of the Logos II's final journey to Jamaica, "There has been a steady flow of visitors to the ship over the past 17 days. So whereas in 2002 Jamaicans had to stand in line for long periods of time, this time around there have been no long lines. In fact, it now takes about five minutes to get on board."
He said, Jamaicans had found a way to avoid the crowd and get on and off the boat easily all through the day into the night. The ship is opened to the public between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
In addition, Mr. Waugh noted that the fastest selling books have been those in the ship's bargain basement.
"For a total of $500 visitors can choose three text books which would normally cost about $3,000 each promoted as the 'deal bag' sale. These include such tomes as Principles of Economics, Introduction to Sociology and Introduction to Psychology. However, while each visitor is only permitted to buy one of any text book, there is no limit to the number of 'deal bags' each can buy.
