THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE to express my disgust with the drivers who do not know how to properly use the dual carriage highways such as the Old Harbour Bypass and Mandela Highway. These ignorant or selfish divers feel that because there are two lanes, it means that they can drive in any one, irrespective of the speed they are travelling.
I think it time these drivers start using the highways properly and move over to the left lane soon after overtaking another vehicle and leave the right lane clear for faster moving vehicles. It probably does not matter seriously when both lanes are congested with slow moving traffic such as the case with the Mandela Highway during peak hours, but it is really a nuisance when the traffic is fast moving and you want to overtake.
TOO OFTEN
Too often we see very slow moving traffic such as large trucks hogging the right lane. This leads to the faster moving vehicle having to pass on the left side (undertake) which is quite dangerous. Most of the time if you toot a slow moving vehicle that is occupying the right lane (with the intention for it to move over to the left lane so you can pass), you get no response so you have no choice but to undertake.
My advice for these drivers is that they revisit the Road Code or simply use common sense. Maybe the authorities can bring about a greater level of awareness, especially since there are plans to have more dual carriage highways in Jamaica pretty soon.
