Youthlink offers CXC help to western students
published: Thursday | April 22, 2004

WESTERN BUREAU:

STUDENTS FROM western Jamaica, who will be sitting CXC examinations this year, will be getting an opportunity to fine-tune their preparations courtesy of a one-day workshop being staged by The Gleaner, through its Youthlink publication.

"We will be staging a one-day examination techniques workshop for students preparing for the CXC examinations in the Western Region," said Karin Cooper, the Gleaner's manager for corporate affairs. "CXC examination markers will lecture in the areas of mathematics, English Language and accounts and information technology."

The western workshop, which is scheduled for Monday, May 3, in the Town Hall at the Montego Bay Civic Centre, is considered a critical exercise in setting the stage for examination success. Students in Kingston have been benefiting from such workshops within recent years and in a bid to promote wider participation, The Gleaner has taken the decision to offer western students the same benefit.

"The workshops has been quite successful in Kingston, attracting large number of students," said Mrs. Cooper. "We are hoping that we will see the same level of participation in western Jamaica as we seek to help prepared those students for their examinations."

The lecturers are as follows: George King (information technology), the principal of Pentab High School and Evening Institute; Doris Mayne (English Language), teacher Hillel Academy; Dianne Buchanan (principle of accounts), teacher Kingston College; Clement Radcliffe (mathematics), principal of Glenmuir High School.

The timetable for the workshop is as follows: 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. English Language; 10:35 a.m. 12:05 a.m. principles of accounts; 12:05 12:35 a.m. lunch; 12:40 a.m. 2:10 p.m. information technology; and 2:15 p.m. 3:45 p.m. mathematics.

Students who wish to avail themselves of this novel gesture are being as asked to register in advance through the following channels: e-mail: youthlinkcxcseminar@gleanerjm.com, Fax: 952-3828/922-6528. Registration Information can al so be obtained by calling 952-2454 and 922-3400, ext. 6315/6082.
